Your Feng Shui Survival Guide for Mercury Retrograde

I’ve been faithfully marking the days off on my calendar.

Mainly because (against the advice of my astrology and intuitive friends) I moved my mom into an Assisted Living facility during this Mercury Retrograde. AND Mercury has stayed true to its reputation by throwing an exhaustive number of miscommunication hiccups and delays my way.

Unfamiliar with Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury Retrograde is a 3-week time period where the planet Mercury appears to move backwards in the sky, because of how fast it orbits the Sun in relation to the Earth. This illusion happens 3-4 times a year.

Since the planet Mercury is associated with communication, technology, and travel; it’s common to experience hiccups with these aspects of your life during a Mercury Retrograde. Things like…

• Text message oopsies

• He said/she said moments

• Contract typos

• Computer glitches

• Lost emails

• Dropped calls

• Canceled flights

While we can’t control the planets or the energy they bring during a retrograde cycle, we can look to our homes for support.

HERE ARE MY FAVORITE FENG SHUI HACKS FOR SURVIVING MERCURY RETROGRADE:

DOORS

Mercury is associated with communication, and in feng shui, doors are associated with the mouths (or voices) of people in your home. This is a good time to check…Do all your doors open fully? Do any of them need repair or a fresh coat of paint? Are any squeaky or hard to open/close?

HALLWAYS

Hallways are where we travel from one space in our home to another space. Are your hallways free of clutter? Are they interesting? Do you have things on the walls that inspire you?

MUDROOM

Our mudrooms are often the space that houses all the things (keys, shoes, jackets, umbrellas, etc.) that we need when we travel to and fro. Does your mudroom (or entry) need a refresh? A good cleaning? A tad of decluttering?

PHONES

Our phones are what we use to communicate with other humans? Do you have a cracked screen that needs to be repaired? Apps that need to be updated? A cell phone case that’s a bit drab?

ADDRESS BOOK

Who’s in your address book or phone contacts? Is anyone missing from the list? Anyone you’d prefer not to communicate with?

THE METAL ELEMENT

In feng shui, the metal element is associated with focus, precision, and clarity. It’s what we want to add to our homes when we want to avoid travel delays, technical glitches, or communication blunders. The metal element is represented by grays and whites, circular and oval shapes, and metal or metallic objects.

THE EARTH ELEMENT

In feng shui, the earth element is associated with stability and groundedness. It’s the element we want to add when Mercury snafus sneak up on us. The earth element is represented by earth tones, square and rectangular shapes, and objects made from the earth such as pottery and crystals.

DECLUTTERING

This may be last on my list, but it’s my non-negotiable when the energies are wackadoodle. During a Mercury Retrograde, decluttering anything having to do with communication or technology will have extra impact. Focus on things like your filing cabinet, your computer files, your desk, and your inbox.
