What should I do with the thing that I can’t let go of -
but can’t help feel triggered by?
It’s a question I get all the time. And honestly, one I’ve asked myself.
Because everything in your home holds energy.
And in my utopia world, every thing you own would either uplift your vibration or, at the very least, stay energetically neutral.
But let’s be real. Life is complicated.
There are some things we simply have to keep. They’re objects with weight and meaning - which may also be tied to loss, grief, heartbreak, or trauma.
You may not be ready or able to let them go. But keeping them doesn’t always feel good either.
To name just a few ::
Tax returns (from years that were financially painful)
Divorce papers (from a love that broke your heart)
Photographs (from a chapter you’ve worked hard to heal)
Letters (from someone you miss deeply)
Medications (that remind you of illness or survival)
These aren’t just physical items. They’re energetic anchors. And when they live in your home, they can quietly drain you.
So what can you do?
Let me walk you through a ritual I use to shift the energy around items that feel emotionally heavy, but still need to stay in your space.
A Magically Infused Ritual for Containing & Shifting Heavy Energy
STEP ONE :: Ask yourself - do I really need to keep it?
This may seem obvious, but it’s powerful. Sometimes we tell ourselves we have to keep something, when really it’s just an old story or fear speaking. Be radically honest here.
If it’s a true no? Light a candle, bless the item, and let it go - with a trip to the thrift store, a ceremonial fire, or your own version of release.
If the answer is yes, keep going.
STEP TWO :: Set your intention of how you want to feel about it
This step is key. You’re deciding what kind of energy you want this object to hold going forward.
For example:
If it’s divorce papers, your intention might be “let there be peace between us.”
If it’s a photo from a painful season, your intention might be “may this image carry healing, not heartbreak.”
Write it down if you’d like. Whisper it. Let it shape what comes next.
STEP THREE :: Clear it’s energy
Choose one or more of these methods to shift the energy:
Salt or Selenite: Place the object near a slab of selenite or in a bowl of salt for 24 hours.
Sound: Use a bell, chime, tuning fork, or drum to bathe the item in sound.
Smoke: Pass it through the smoke of sage or palo santo.
Sunshine: Let it sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to refresh and purify.
Spray: Mix water with a few drops of essential oil (lavender, lemon, rosemary, or frankincense are great options) and lightly spritz the object.
STEP FOUR :: Wrap it up
Choose either black or white fabric, paper, or envelopes to wrap your object in.
Use black to contain and protect the energy
Useful when the object still carries emotional chargeUse white to neutralize or uplift
Ideal when you’ve processed the emotions and want to experience a sense of lightness
STEP FIVE :: Store it with intention
Here are a few do’s and don’ts to consider when storing your object.
Don’t store in a high traffic area of your home
Don’t store under your bed
Don’t store in a space close to where you frequently sit
Do store in an opaque, closed box, or container with a lid
Do store with a crystal for support - rose quartz for love, black tourmaline or smoky quartz for protection
NOW OVER TO YOU ::
Have you ever had to store something that felt emotionally heavy?
Do you have your own rituals for clearing or containing its energy?
Let me know in the comments.
I’d love to hear your experience and your magic!

This was great, Dorena - especially step 2. Don't know that I've seen anyone cover deciding how you want to feel about it before, and that was just what I needed to hear today. 👏🐺
One thing I wanted to add: I find that letting go of things in stages helps me. Putting things in the basement first for a few months, and then finally tossing/donating/selling them is easier for me.
